Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave launched on September 17, 2026, on Nintendo Switch 2, the series' first entry on the console. It's developed by Intelligent Systems, and reviews put it among the best-rated games of the year.
The Heroic Games and a time-travel twist
The story is set in Dagda. Its capital, Dagsion, hosts the Heroic Games, a tournament whose winner is granted a single wish. Four heroes compete, each with a personal stake:
- Cai, from the village of Ribeira, fights to save his imprisoned father.
- Dietrich, a swordsman who washes ashore after a sea monster attacks his ship, wants stronger opponents.
- Theodora, from Saramis, fights to restore the honor of her goddess and defend her kingdom.
- Leda, a musically gifted noble, seeks revenge on her father's murderer, who is also entering the Games.
Five years after the Games, the demon god Balor has been revived and the empire is collapsing. Sothis, the progenitor god, charges one soul, the player character, with saving the world, and the goddess Fortuna's time-travel powers let you go back and change the four heroes' fates. You can switch between the heroes and play their stories in parallel, and each route can be replayed with different outcomes.
How critics received it
Reviews went live on September 16. The game debuted at 89 on Metacritic and 90 on OpenCritic, where it sits in the 98th percentile of games scored. Verdicts, as excerpted on OpenCritic:
- IGN (10/10): "provides an excellent pairing of combat strategy and management"
- GameSpot (9/10): "a sprawling masterpiece of a strategy RPG"
- Eurogamer (5/5): "A synergy of everything that has made the series great for generations"
- Metro GameCentral (8/10): "The best Fire Emblem game of the modern era"
- Nintendo Life (8/10): "the battles have never felt better"
Critics praise the four routes, which connect into one larger story and each carry the depth of a standalone Fire Emblem, and call the combat among the series' best, over a campaign that runs well past 100 hours. The criticism targets pacing: a slow start, repetitive free-time management, and side content that "drags," in GameRant's words. Giant Bomb, which doesn't score, found that "the only major problem is vacuous writing."
