Jagex used RuneFest 2026 to confirm what years of speculation had circled around without landing: a fourth full MMO set in the RuneScape universe. The studio didn't put a "4" on it during the show, but the press reaction was immediate, and the shorthand has already stuck.

RuneFest 2026 ran October 3-4 at the NEC in Birmingham, drawing more than 6,000 fans for Jagex's flagship community event. The weekend opened with a full orchestral performance from the Manchester Video Game Orchestra and composer Mod Ash, setting up two days built around a single theme: RuneScape turns 25 this year, and Jagex used the anniversary to lay out where the franchise goes next.

A fourth MMO, built on Unreal Engine, set after Dragonwilds

The headline reveal is a new MMO, confirmed to be early in development and running on Unreal Engine instead of RuneScape's long-standing in-house tech. Jagex framed it as a way to bring in a new generation of players while keeping the depth, freedom and community focus that have defined RuneScape for a quarter century.

The setting ties into Jagex's recent output. The new MMO is set in a region called Ashenfall, during Gielinor's Sixth Age, years after the events of RuneScape: Dragonwilds, the survival spin-off that launched into Steam early access in 2025. According to reporting from outlets including PCGamer, the project didn't start as a standalone game. It began as a pitch for a Dragonwilds expansion, and the scope grew large enough that Jagex spun it off into its own full MMO.

Jagex hasn't set a release window and was explicit that the game is early in development. For a studio managing a 25-year-old live-service ecosystem, that sequencing makes sense: show the ambition first, gather community feedback over the following years, and lock in a date only once the foundations hold up.

Five announcements in one weekend

The new MMO wasn't the only news. RuneFest 2026 also confirmed:

  • RuneScape Reignited: a major refresh of the original RuneScape MMO, launching December 2, 2026, described internally as a "Classic moment" for the game.
  • An animated series: produced with Charles White Jr. (known online as MoistCr1TiKaL) and studio Lyrical Media, adapting RuneScape outside of the games themselves.
  • Old School RuneScape's Menaphos expansion: opening in 2027 with the Master-level quest "Fool's Gold" continuing the Amascut storyline, Old School's first Skilling Dungeon, and a Soul Altar hidden inside Jalanam, the Pharaoh's pyramid.
  • Dragonwilds' "Luminance" update: arriving December 2026 as a prelude to 2027's "Blood Crystal Saga," adding Elves, new elf-themed character and building customization, and the Prayer skill.

The roadmap now spans four fronts at once: RuneScape's original game, its classic-style revival, its newest survival spin-off, and a fourth entry built on a different engine.

Why this matters beyond RuneScape's existing player base

Vostrike normally covers mobile live-service and gacha games, not 25-year-old browser MMOs. This one earns an exception. Jagex is committing to a full Unreal Engine successor for one of gaming's longest-running live-service franchises, timed to a 25th anniversary and backed by a parallel content slate across three other active titles. Live-service watchers on any platform, mobile included, should pay attention to a bet that size: it shows how a legacy MMO tries to survive its next decade instead of coasting on nostalgia.

Jagex hasn't set a release date, a name, or a platform list beyond "built in Unreal Engine" for the new MMO. The next signal will come from Jagex's post-RuneFest developer blogs, which usually follow a reveal like this with early engine footage and systems details.
