Arrakis is open to console players. Dune: Awakening, Funcom's open-world survival MMO set in the Dune universe, releases today, September 22, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, fifteen months after its PC launch in June 2025. Deluxe and Ultimate Edition owners already got a five-day head start on September 17, ahead of the wider console launch.
Published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, the game drops players on the desert planet Arrakis to gather resources (Spice above all), build and defend bases, and survive threats ranging from rival factions to the planet's infamous sandworms. On PC, it became Funcom's fastest-selling release to date, peaking at around 189,000 concurrent players on Steam, a rare number for a paid survival title with no free-to-play hook.
The single-player mode consoles were waiting for
The headline addition for this launch isn't platform support alone: it's a full solo mode, the most requested feature since the PC release. Players can now experience the entire open world, story, and the Deep Desert region without ever encountering other players on the map, while still interacting with NPCs and story content as designed.
The mode ships with three preset difficulty tiers plus manual customization of survival settings, letting players dial in exactly how punishing hunger, thirst, heat, and worm encounters should be. It's a direct answer to a recurring criticism of the PC version: that Dune: Awakening's MMO structure made it a hard sell for players who wanted to experience Arrakis at their own pace.
Console owners are also getting content that PC players received gradually over the past year, all bundled in at once:
- A rebuilt endgame loop, reworking the systems players hit after finishing the main narrative arc
- The conclusion of the "Book One" storyline, wrapping up the main narrative thread introduced at PC launch
- New, more demanding difficulty options, aimed at veteran survival players
- Xbox Play Anywhere support, enabling cross-play and cross-progression between Xbox consoles and the Windows PC Store version
Day-one Game Pass, and a staggered global rollout
Xbox Series X|S subscribers get Dune: Awakening included in Xbox Game Pass starting today, a shift for a game that skipped the subscription service at its PC debut. A physical PS5 edition also ships today in most regions.
Not every territory gets the game at the same time, though. In Japan, both the physical and digital PS5/Xbox versions won't arrive until October 29, 2026, over a month after the rest of the world.
As one PC Gamer preview of the console build put it:
"The solo option doesn't just open the door to console players, it fundamentally changes who Dune: Awakening is for."
What to watch next
The real test now is whether Funcom's survival-MMO formula, built around player-driven economies and Deep Desert expeditions, holds up once a large wave of solo-focused console players joins servers still populated by PC veterans with over a year of progress. Early reception on PS5 and Xbox storefronts, plus how the solo mode handles the game's toughest late-game threats, should be the clearest signal of whether this console expansion earns the audience Funcom is chasing.
